CONFIRMED: DJI To Mothball Phantom 4 Drone, Mavic Pro, Osmo and More

Updated 2018-08-30:

DJI has confirmed to DroneReviewsAndNews.com that the letter sent to DJI dealers (above) is authentic.

DJI spokesperson Adam Lisberg reached out to us today with the following comment:

“As DJI constantly develops new technology, products are improved upon and naturally reach their end of life.
We can confirm that a message rgarding some DJI products reaching their end of life has been sent to dealers.
This is part of DJI’s regular communication with dealers when evaluating the state of technology and customer demand.”

We live in a world of functional obsolescence: even though something works just fine, product evolution kicks it to the curb in the next improved version.

This is equally true for drone companies as they make advances in camera technology and hardware to produce ever-better models.

Today we have confirmed reports that DJI sent notice to authorized dealers that a significant number of DJI drones are now entering an “End of Life” (EOL) process.

Here’s the complete list:

What does EOL mean for these products and those who own them?

The transition into EOL is gradual, and not likely to happen over-night.  Eventually DJI will stop supporting the devices and there will be no more firmware updates or repair services.  In a nutshell in order for DJI to support the largest number of users it will eventually cease to provide repair service and technical support for these products….usually once they have stopped being production for 2 years.

The last time DJI pushed products into EOL was March 2016 when the  2.4Hhz Datalink, iOSD, Naza-M and F330 were mothballed.

If you’ve recently purchased one of the affected products above, don’t worry.  The EOL process has only just begun.  You’ll still have a couple of years of service and it’s quite possible that you’ll decide to upgrade to a newer device by the time support actually stops.

The other factor to consider is that these products are likely going on sale. Soon.

After any DJI product launch we always see the legacy products go on sale.  With the potential for EOL to kick in, that might bring you some serious bargains.

So if you’re looking to pick up a second drone, this might just be the right time.  Subscribe at right to be the first to hear about deals and breaking news.
