How to Shoot and Edit Vertical Drone Panoramas with ‘The Drone Angel’ Emily Kaszton

As an experienced drone user, one thing I’ve learned over the last few years is that composing and capture landscape photos is both easy and enjoyable. But editing them is usually where the fun disappears for many beginners.

Drone cameras, like the 48 megapixel sensor in the Mavic Air 2, just keep getting better so it’s almost impossible to take a bad photo. There’s even automated photo-editing software like Skylum’s Airmagic that uses artificial intelligence to enhance your aerial photo.  Airmagic is so good it actually detects what drone you took the photo with and makes specific corrections based on that camera’s quirks. (You can sign up for a trial of Airmagic here.)

But some of the most beautiful drone photos we’ve seen have come to us in our Instagram feed, courtesy of an account (and hashtag) aptly called @womenwhodrone and #womenwhodrone. Two influencers in particular really caught our attention: Merr Watson (@merrwatson) and Emily Kaszton (@thedroneangel) have really set the bar high with the amazing aerial images they’ve captured.

But Watson and Kaszton aren’t just great photographers. Both actively share their techniques and know-how in downloadable e-books, instructional videos, workshops and coaching. Check out Merr’s website and Emily’s website to learn more about their techniques, tutorials and pre-sets their using to make their images really pop.

As a professional photographer Emily has received numerous accolades for her work. In 2017 her Wave Catchers (below) won the International Photographer of the Year Award for Aerial Nature photography.

It’s stunning images like these that kept appearing in my instagram feed and inspired me to start experimenting with my own drone panoramas.

So today we’re sharing two recent videos by Emily (@thedroneangel) on shooting and editing vertical panoramas that will help take your landscape photography to the next level. On her Youtube channel Emily walks you through her techniques, sharing tips along the way that will also make you a better drone pilot.

The instructional, easy-to-follow videos are intelligently laid out in smartly-labeled segments so you can easily find and rewatch segments.

Emily recommends that you have some basic Photoshop understanding before diving in to the manual edit of a vertical panorama. But I watched the video, and she does such an effective explanation of each step as she’s going that most noobs should be able to edit their own panorama with little trouble.

The real secret to developing strong Photoshop skills is practice. Use it frequently. Keep it fresh. And look for opportunities to learn one feature at a time to gradually develop your own level of mastery.

The first video below highlights using the Mavic 2 Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro to capture vertical panoramas, but all of the concepts and steps can be followed using any drone that has a good camera.

In the second video, Emily guides you through two methods she uses to stitch the photos together and easily edit it to look like one seamless image. She wraps the video up by showing you how to perfectly crop it for Instagram.

If you find Emily’s content helpful, give the videos a thumbs up so other drone enthusiasts can easily find her content. Make sure you subscribe to her channel, and leave her a comment on a topic you’d like to see in a future video.
