DJI Rumor: DJI Teases New Dual Camera Enterprise Drone That Will Drop on December 15th

Despite a global pandemic, DJI had one of it’s busiest years with the release of the Mini 2, Mavic Air 2, Pocket 2, RSC 2 and RS2.  With the latest teaser on Twitter, it looks like the enterprise side of the business has been busy as well. Last night DJI Enterprise dropped news that a new dual-camera drone is coming on December 15th. It appears like could be a new Mavic 2 Dual Enterprise drone update…or would that be a Mavic 3 Enterprise Dual?

Depending on the answer, this could have big implications for the Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom models.

Not the FPV Drone

Reading the comments, a lot of followers think it’s the gimbal for the upcoming DJI FPV Drone due to be released on January 8th, 2021.

We would be surprised if DJI’s Enterprise division was working on a recreational/sport drone. And since we already know the release date of the FPV Drone Combo, we know it isn’t that.

Looking at our Mavic Buyers Guide, it shows the Mavic 2 Series has been live for 842 days (as of writing). The Mavic Pro version immediatlely prior to the Mavic 2 Series, the Mavic Pro Platinum, was only around for 677 days before it was replaced. DJI has been trending to more frequent product refreshes.

DRN Drone Buyers Guide

If you pay as much attention to DJI drone releases as we do, you know that DJI is notorious for releasing new versions of drones very close to the anniversary of the model being replaced. The Osmo Pocket and Mavic Mini were both updated to new versions just one year after their launches, almost to the day.

Is This The First Mavic 3?

The original Mavic 2 Dual Enterprise drone was released on December 20th, 2018…almost exactly two years prior to the upcoming announcement. And we learned a couple of years ago that DJI really wanted to focus on growing the enterprise side of the business. Enterprise customers have special needs, and need specialized cameras and sensors to meet their critical project demands.

With two years since the Mavic 2 Enterprise was released, has DJI actually fallen behind keeping the Mavic 2 Enterprise Series current?

We know the Mavic 2 Series is due to be refreshed in 2021, and DJI does have a habit of releasing new consumer drones in the month of January. A Mavic 3 Enterprise drop in December would be a good lead-up to the Mavic 3 Pro consumer drone at the start of the year.

FLIR Replacement?

Almost two years ago, FLIR Systems acquired drone make Aeryon Labs putting them one step closer to being in direct competition with DJI.  Could this mean that DJI has developed it’s own thermal imaging systems and is ready to go head-to-head with FLIR?

DJI has surprised us over and over, so anything is possible.

8K / 48MP Gimbal Replacement For Mavic 2 Enterprise?

Last year at CES2020 in Las Vegas, Autel Robotics released the EVO II Series of drones that included models: the 8K base model, a 6K EVO II Pro model, and the 8K/48MP Thermally equipped EVO II Dual.

The Autel II’s 38 minute battery is 22% more than DJI’s Mavic 2 Enterprise, and the EVO II camera specs are also vastly superior to the existing Mavic 2 Enterprise.

If DJI is just adding a new gimbal option to the Mavic 2 Enterprise, it’s going to be mounted on a drone that has already been lapped by competitors. And that’s not how DJI usually does things.

DJI’s loss to AUTEL in patent court challenges last year may have stung enough that it lit a fire under the Enterprise division to try and stop AUTEL from gaining any more traction in Enterprise sales.

There are lot’s of options of what this DJI Enterprise product drop will be. And like the lead-up to all DJI product launches we think the leaks and drone rumors are just getting started.
