The Must Have Accessory For The Osmo Mobile 2

If you bought the Osmo Mobile 2 (OM2) recently, you’ll notice that there aren’t a lot of accessories for it in the DJI Store.

Aside from an Osmo Mobile 2 base, there’s nothing.  The OM2 lacks the attachment screw-hole for a cold shoe style bracket that allows you to attach a microphone, lights, etc.  With the tripod screw-hole in the bottom of the handle, we think it’s just a matter of time before attachements start to appear.

But straight out of the box, there is one “must have” attachment for the OM2 that helps you take advantage of the built in USB charging port in the handle of the OM2.

Because the OM2 also acts as a power bank for your smartphone, you can charge it while using it in the OM2.  Except for one thing: the configuration of the charging port of your phone in relation to the gimbal arm.

If you’re using a bottom charging phone like an iPhone, the length of cord extending from your phone is going to be problematic for your lightning port, your cord or the gimbal itself.

We love that the power bank charges our phone while filming, but we also recognized right away that a standard lightning cable in this scenario is just a bad setup.  As the photo, right, shows, a standard Lightning cable sticks out over 25mm from the port before it can be curled, which will put some undesirable leverage on the Lightning port.

So we went looking for 90 degree Lightning Cables on Amazon (here’s the search results) and found the USAMS 90 Degree braided cable to be absolutely perfect.

When inserted in the lightnng port of the iPhone, the USAMS Lightning cable only extends 11mm from the port, and the plug is soldly formed into its own 90 degree configuration. Unlike a standard cable, there’s not twist or pressure on the wire or the port.  The cylindrical shape of the USAMS plug matches the receiver of the OM2 camera mount that holds the butt of your phone, making it a perfect fit.

Not only is the USAMS 90 degree Lightning Cable ideal for the OM2, the price is right too. Less than $13 on Amazon with FREE Prime shipping.

The length of the cord is 1.2m, longer than you need, but we wanted to keep the standard length for other uses.  We just bundle the extra length up when using the OM2.  If you can find a shorter length one that’s 1 foot in length is ideal.

If you’re an Android user we found the GPROVA 3 Pack for under $10 with the same cylindrical plug style as the USAMS above, that comes in 3, 6 & 10 foot lengths, right.

With over 4 hours of battery life on a single charge, the Osmo Mobile 2 is built for a long day of filming.  Unfortunately there aren’t many cameras that can keep up filming without the extra juice that the charging port supplies.

With the proper 90 degree charging cord you’re getting to capture every moment.  Happy filming!
