REVIEW: The REAL DEAL on DJI Osmo Pocket Audio Quality

We’ve had the DJI Osmo Pocket for about a month now.  We’ve been learning the features, exploring the MIMO app and we’ve even had a firmware upgrade along the way.

But one misconception we keep hearing about the Osmo Pocket is about audio quality.

Right out of the box, one of the first things that impressed us was the surprising quality of the audio.  We couldn’t believe that this little, tiny hole below the screen on the Osmo Pocket could possibly capture decent audio.

Boy were we wrong.

But last week, Youtuber Casey Neistat uploaded a video comparing the Osmo Pocket with the GoPro HERO7 that caused some commotion in the comments.  In the stretch of video where he compares audio quality, the Osmo Pocket sounded terrible.

We can’t fault Casey.  He’s only had it as long as us, and it didn’t come with a manual.  But there must have been something about how Casey was holding the Osmo Pocket on that cold day in New York that affected sound.  After all, we’ve been filming with it since late November and we’ve never had a similar sound experience.

We love the Osmo Pocket.  But we didn’t expect to.

Earlier this year when we reported on leaked Mavic 2 Pro photos that were making the rounds on the internet, we saw the prototype for a handheld 3-axis gimbal in the photo.  It didn’t look like a real, consumer product.  Nothing about it was ergonomic or attractive or spoke to a design asthetic.  It looked boxy and awkward.

Fast forward a few months and our opinion has flipped 180 degrees.

The bottom line for us on the DJI Osmo Pocket can be summed up in one sentence:

“The more we use the Osmo Pocket the more we like it.”

The MIMO app gives you PRO mode features that control all of the camera settings you would expect in a DSLR.  Built-in modes like Timelapse, Motionlapse, Panorama, SloMotion and more are great.  FaceTrack kicks in automatically to perfectly keep your face in frame while in selfie mode, and ActiveTrack gives an experience (in the MIMO app) akin to flying one of DJI’s drones.

In a few weeks we’re going to have access to DJI’s Osmo Pocket accessories that will enrich the experience even further.  And we expect third party releases of even more accessories that will make the DJI Osmo Pocket one of the most rapidly adopted handheld 4K cameras ever.
