Students of the Newmark School of Journalism at the City University of New York have a new course in their calendar and it’s all about drones.
NBC’s drone footage of the damage caused by Hurricane Micheal is a perfect example of how aerial cameras are being deployed to capture a new side of the news. In fact, seeing drone footage in news stories is now so common that every major media organization is relying on the flying cameras to enhance their reporting.
And now, journalism students are being taught how to incorporate drones into their reporting by flying them safely, legally and ethically at New York’s only school teaching drone journalism.
The CUNY course puts students on a path to become FAA-certified drone operators, a legal requirement to use drones in the furtherance of a business. That certification will give Newmark students an advantage when handing out resumes because every major media company is using drones. CNN has almost 30 licensed drone operators in it’s ranks.
