Droneless Summer: Don’t Let DJI Mavic 2 Delay Keep You Sidelined

During the winter there was endless chatter about new Mavic Pro 2 drone rumors.  We got a false start with some false ‘predictions’ but we ended up with what was supposed to be a launch event for the next generation DJI Mavic series of drones.

Unfortunately DJI had to push back the launch for the Mavic 2 drone and, haflway through the summer, thousands of you are still sitting there missing out on capturing the epic moments of 2018.

Our advice to you?  Stop waiting.

Consider the following points and order your drone.  If the Mavic 2 is released is September (as we predict) you’ll have no trouble selling your existing drone.  And online retailers like B&H Photo and Adorama have a trade-in program to help you maximize your value.

If the soon to be launched Mavic 2 was going to be your first drone, chances are high that there is little in the first few months of ownership that you would provide appreciable differences between either a Mavic Pro or a Mavic Air and the new Mavic 2.

You’ll be spending so much time familiarizing yourself with the many, many features and flight modes of your drone that by the time the Mavic 2 is released you may find that you are completely satisified with the Mavic Pro or Air.

Both the Mavic Pro and Mavic Air shoot video in 4K, although the write speed of the Air is faster so the Air does get preferred marks for video.

DJI Mavic Pro tap to focus

The Mavic Pro has a superior camera for still photos, and let’s you ‘tap screen to focus’.  The Mavic Air has ‘fixed focus’.  The Pro gets the best marks for stills.

The Mavic Pro has 6 more minutes of battery life than the Mavic Air.  Not a life-changing amount of flight time if you have enough batteries. (We recommend a minimum of 4).

Lastly, consider size.  A folded Mavic Pro is about the size of a 2L plastic soda bottle.  The Mavic Air is barely longer than an iPhone 7 and fits in almost any pocket.
