DJI Updates Smart Controller for Mini 2 drone

Forget all the DJI rumors about a Mavic 3 or Mini SE. Something really awesome dropped today and it’s a firmware update that now lets you control the Mini 2 with the DJI Smart Controller.

If you’ve visited our site before, you know how much we love the Smart Controller: super bright screen in all light conditions, epic battery, no plugs or cables to fail and highest quality signal. It’s a fan favorite around here.

Since it was released with the DJI Mavic 2 Series in 2019, DJI has updated it’s software several times giving it access to control the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, Mavic Air 2 and the recently released Mavic Air 2S.

DJI Mini 2 firmware update adds Smart Controller access

As soon as we saw the firmware update notice this morning we got right to it, and we have a big tip to help make it easy for you: you must update the Mini 2 firmware with the stock controller first before you can update and connect with the Smart Controller.

We’ll break it down for you:

Step 1 – connect your smartphone to the stock Mini 2 controller  and open the DJI fly app. Click on the firmware update notice and complete the download and update.

Step 2 – connect to the Mini 2 and complete the rest of the firmware instal

Step 3 – Power off the Mini 2 and the stock controller, close the DJI Fly App in your smartphone or tablet

Step 4 – Power up the Smart Controller and complete the new firmware update in it

Step 5 – Connect the Smart Controller to the Mini 2 and you’re good to go.

We couldn’t be happier with this update!

We usually pack multiple drones and to just operate them all from the Smart Controller is a huge convenience that also saves a lot of space in our drone bag.

This should unlock more sales of the Mini 2 for DJI, especially if they sell the Mini 2 on it’s own without the need for the stock controller.

DJI Smart Controller is $749 at store.dji.com.

What do you think? Are you glad to have Smart Controller access for the Mini 2? Do you plan on buying the Smart Controller, or the Mini 2 drone because of this upgrade?

  • Great to be able to control both my Mini2 and Air 2S with the Smart controller. What I want to see next is V2 goggle compatibility with the DJI Air 2S! Do you think this will happen soon?

  • I think it’s utterly ridiculous for them to force Americans to use heavy controllers to operate a drone which is advertised as being “ultralight”. I carried the Mavic Mini on foot 3,000 miles from Mexico-to-Canada and have some of the most outstanding photography ever. The Mavic Mini drone could be carried thousands of miles and thousands of feet up mountains, because nothing on the consumer market in 2021 can beat it. When the “Mini 2” debuted, they gave it a dump truck sized controller, which not only makes the payload take up more space in your backpack, but is 112 grams heavier. Try carrying a dead iPhone 12 up 5,000 feet to a 14,000 foot mountain and compare it to not carrying that dead weight. It makes a tremendous difference for hikers and backpackers who depend on it. Anyone who says 112 grams of deadweight carried 3,000 miles doesn’t make a difference should visit Wuhan and eat some bats…The “Mini 2” sucks

  • Just ordered a new Mini 2 fly-more for use with my existing Smart Controller. The Smart Controller may be at the end of life as far as generation goes, but looking forward to quickly grabbing a smaller drone to fly with the same controller I have grown to love using with my Mavic 2 Zoom.
