DJI Teaser Trailer For See The Bigger Picture Event Hints At New Features

DJI dropped a trailer for the upcoming Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom “See The Bigger Picture” launch event, and as usual, we think DJI has put at least one easter eggs in the video for us to uncover.

The announcer in the video tells us:

“Let us take you beyond the horizon where something incredible awaits”

We think this clue could hint at one (or both) of two scenarios.  Based on previous DJI rumors on the Mavic 2 Series launch, we think there’s a very high probability that a built-in “Hyperlapse” intelligent flight mode will be a new feature in the Mavic 2 Series.

In fact, if you watch the video again, you’ll notice multiple examples of hyperlapse in the trailer.

But let’s get back to “the horizon” again, because that is key to the speculation.  If you look at the orientation of the new Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom camera gimbals you’ll notice that the front of the camera is further forward in the gimbal cavity, putting the front the lens in line with the front of the aircraft.

Why is that important?

Well we think that the gimbals on the new Mavic 2 Series drones will allow the camera to tilt up beyond horizontal allowing drone film-makers the ability to shoot subjects from a new perspective…from below.  The range of vertical tilt above the horizon won’t be massive like the PARROT Ananafi’s 180 degree range of vertical tilt, but it will be enough to add a new dimension to your photos and videos.

You can see the difference in the position of the camera lens when you compare the original Mavic Pro (l) to the new Mavic 2 (r).  The camera in the new Mavic 2 Series has been pushed forward by designers for a reason.  The original Mavic Pro and Mavic Pro Platinum camera is set back in the gimbal bay almost 2cm.

The original Mavic Pro would never have been able to tilt up to any meaningful degree because the aircraft chassis would quickly enter the camera’s field of view.

Looking more closely at the Mavic 2, we estimate that vertical tilt could be as much as +25% above horizontal.

The best news, of course, is that we’ll know all of the details on the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom drones in just a few days.  The DJI See The Bigger Picture event is only 4 days from now.  You can bookmark the livestream here at live.dji.com.
