Updated: DJI Mini SE Price Reveal And More Details

DJI Mini SE drone is dropping soon and now that we know the price and exclusive retail details it’s all ‘coming into focus’. What we’ve learned from these latest DJI rumors might surprise you.

$299 Price

This is the #1 thing our readers have been asking for. What does the DJI Mini SE sell for?

Unlike the DJI drones released at the DJI Store, this product is a bare-bones basic kit. All you get is drone, battery, and controller.  All of which are a gateway drug to upgrading to a better experience at DJI.com.

DJI Mini SE price is US$299 and it’s a basic kit. Drone, controller and 1 battery…but it’s $100 less than the original Mavic Mini! Just in time for Father’s Day! As the saying goes every year at this time: “Best deals for Dads and Grads”.

Walmart Exclusive

DRN is the first to declare that the Mini SE release is a “Walmart Exclusive”.  If you have any familiarity with big-box and bulk retail you’ll know all about the branding, re-packaging and marketing of these one-off products. During the 2000s there were hedge funds that dealt almost exclusively in repackaging left over inventory of high end electronics from the likes of Sony and others, just to off-load to Costco at a premium.

Because of the Walmart connection, we think the Mini SE is likely a “one and done” product with a short shelf life. Get it while you can, “quantities are limited”.

You can view the ‘live’ listing on the Walmart website here, which also lists some of the specs of the Mini SE including:

  • Single frequency
  • 1/2.3″ sensor
  • 12MP stills
  • 2.7K video 25/30fps
  • 1080p 25/30/50/60fps
  • single shot and interval photo
  • Dronie, Circle, Helix & Rocket QuickShots
  • 3-frame Auto Exposure Bracketing
  • 6km transmission range

Low cost High quality Drone

Even though DJI is likely dumping the old Mavic Mini inventory on Walmart shoppers, the bottom line is it’s a super capable drone.  Since the original Mini was launched in 2019, DJI has updated it’s firmware to give it manual camera control, and other features, on top of an already great flight app and battery life.

In the right hands, even a DJI Mini SE can produce incredible content at 2.7K t 30fps or 1080p at 60fps.  All you have to do is look at the content that elite creators like Peter McKinnon and Casey Neistat have shared on Youtube. Don’t discount the Mini SE.

Should You Buy DJI Mini SE

When we first flew the original Mavic Mini in the Las Vegas desert during CES2020 we were sold. The fact that such a tiny drone could be so small and capable, and produce such high quality photos(below) and video had us declaring it our new favorite drone.

And for months afterwards we reached for the Mavic Mini every time we went out for a quick and dirty local shoot. It was always in our bag.

So we’ll answer this question two ways. First off, if you’re looking to step into a drone, and don’t want to drop much money, the DJI Mini SE is perfect. You’re going to experience the most advanced flight app and remote controller from the global leader in consumer drones … attached to a super cheap, yet incredibly high quality drone.

If you’re a more advanced drone user, maybe using a Mavic 2 Series or Autel EVO II for day to day operations, you couldn’t ask for a better companion drone to have in your bag when airspace restrictions or convenience make the Mini SE the right choice.

So even though we’re a bit skeptical about why DJI is running the Mini SE through Walmart, we don’t doubt for one second that the Mini SE is an incredible value. Especially if you’re buying your first drone.

Once the Mini SE goes ‘live’ we’ll be adding it to our 2021 Drone Buyers Guide.
