BREAKING: DJI Osmo Pocket Firmware Update Reveals Waterproof Case & Extension Rod Are HERE!!

Back in November we attended the release event in New York for the DJI Osmo Pocket, the scrappy little 4K vlogging camera with a 3-axis mechanical gimbal and a robust suite of in-app features that has since taken the world by storm.

At the NYC release event, DJI showcased Osmo Pocket accessories that would drop shortly after the lanch.  Our contacts inside DJI intially indicated that late March/ early April 2019 was the most likely for the Waterproof Case and the Extension Rod.  With the release of the all-new Osmo Action in May, we think the programmers may have had too much on their plate to handle it all.

In fact, the last update we had was the only holdup on the Waterproof Case was programming.

Fast forward to this evening, and there’s a very special firmware update for the DJI Osmo Pocket.

Firmware V01.08.00.20 just dropped and it has three features that are being added:

  1. Added phase detection auto focus to increase focus speed
  2. Added support for the Osmo Pocket Extension Rod
  3. Added underwater mode for the Osmo Pocket Waterproof Case

This is fantastic news for anyone waiting for the Osmo Pocket Waterproof Case to finally make an appearance.

We wanted the Osmo Pocket Waterproof Case to be released before summer so we had an excuse to go try it out in the tropics.  Oh well.

The Osmo Pocket Waterproof Case is a serious piece of hardware.  It provides protection for your Osmo Pocket all the way down to 60 meters (197feet) making it a truly practical tool for scuba divers.

And with a large clear lens for the Pocket to film through, videos shot at the surface will beautifully capture what’s above and below the water.

To access “underwater mode” swipe down from the top of the LCD screen to reveal the settings menu.

Swipe right to left until you reach a new icon for that mode.  Tap the Underwater Mode icon and the message tells you to Power Off the Osmo Pocket and insert it in the Waterproof Case.

Once inside the case, simply power it back on with the external buttons and the Osmo Pocket enters a modified version of the Tilt-Lock mode.

This mode has two primary differences from Tilt-Locked.  The first is that the camera has a slightly steeper downward angle to match the profile of the case.

The second is that the side to side yaw range of the gimbal is reduced so the camera never captures the edges of the Waterproof Case lens.  Very smart.

If you’ve been using the Osmo Pocket as a handheld selfie camera, I’m sure you’ve noticed that the angle for self-filming isn’t ideal.  Now that the Extension Rod is here you’ll be able to extend the camera 80 cm from your hand and capture a more pleasing top-down filming angle.

Demo’s we saw in New York showed the Extension Rod with a fold-out tripod base in the hand grip making it even MORE practical.

Timing on these accessories is anyone’s guess, but it wouldn’t surprise us to see it as early as tomorrow.

At time of writing, prices weren’t yet available on these two new Osmo Pocket accessories but we” will update you as soon as we know.
