DJI sent out invites today for a special event at the Good Morning America studios in New York City on November 28th and it means a new drone is coming our way for the holidays.
The image that accompanied the invite definitely has some ‘easter eggs’ in it, which give us a few clues as to what is being revealed. More on that later.
First off we need to clarify what is being showcased by DJI at the “Because Life Is Big” launch event.
We think it’s going to be the DJI Phantom 5 with interchangeable lenses and a larger, higher resolutions sensor. Which brings us to the image above. More specifically, the swimming pool in the image. Do you recognize the shape?
When we put it beside an image of the new Hasselblad lens on the Mavic 2 Pro, you can see why it look so familiar:
The shape of the swimming pool exactly matches the Hasselblad camera on the Mavic 2 Pro. So maybe it means that the new Phantom 5 also has a Hasselblad camera with an even larger sensor than the Mavic 2 Pro?
We won’t know for sure until the launch event, but things are definitely looking good.
Features we anticipate that could be new in the Phantom 5 Series that will be released at the end of the month:
- built in zoom
- interchangeable lenses
- longest battery life yet for the pro-sumer series of drones
- massive on board storage
The depth shown in the top image, and the reference to BIG, really speaks to the suggestion that this new camera will have a zoom function. And that same BIG theme also supports why longer battery life and BIG on board storage make sense.
Lastly, we are firm believers that BIG also refers to the sensor size. Because the Mavic 2 Pro has a 1″ CMOS sensor, could the new Phantom 5 have an even bigger sensor than the Mavic 2 Pro?
But what if we’re wrong on all of the above?
What if the November 28th “Because Life Is Big” event isn’t about a drone at all?
You’ll recall that we broke the story last week about a new Osmo Pocket Wireless Module that just cleared the FCC.
And we have two backup theories about what DJI is releasing at the Because Life Is Big event.
First back-up theory: It’s a New Osmo handheld camera. With a new Hasselblad lens.
Second back-up theory: It’s an all new DJI Action Cam designed to take on Go-Pro.
Of the two alternates, we lean heavily towards a DJI Action Cam. In fact we saw a prototype of one in photos that were leaked months ago prior to the Mavic 2 Pro launch. It even fits with the theme of the launch event, Because Life is Big you need an action camera that is small to take it with you everywhere you go.
No doubt there will be lots of speculation in the days leading up to the Because Life Is Big launch event.
