2 Times We’ve Seen DJI’s New Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV)

Fresh off the success of another DJI Robomasters competition, in which students build and program battling ground vehicles to claim the trophy, DJI is releasing a consumer version of their ground vehicle to encourage and develop programming and robotics skills in users. Branded as Learn to Win the new product drops later today.  Click here to watch a video trailer.

Aside from all of the Robomasters images that have been promoted by DJI over the years like this one, below, of

standard competition vehicle, there have actually been two other times when we’ve caught a glimpse of what’s coming.

One of those times was when we reported on leaked images of the DJI Mavic 2 Pro.  At the time we circled a curious object in the bottom left of the image that turned out to be the DJI Osmo Pocket vlogging camera.

But if you look in the top left corner of that photo you can see parts of a ground vehicle, similar to the one above.  Most obvious is the unique construction of the wheels.  You can’t miss the similarity.

And back in July 2018, almost one year ago we shared information about a new US Design Patent for an unmanned robot vehicle, below.

The DJI Robomasters competition has been going for some time now, to help students develop skills in programming and robotics as well as complex problem solving.

DJI partnered with Ryze Tech to create a programmable drone called the Tello to help make it fun & easy for users of all ages to learn to program.  It looks like the new DJI UGV will serve the same purpose: a fun, family oriented platform to learn programming and problem solving.

We’re hoping the new Unmanned Ground Vehicle also has features that are friendly to the latest DJI products like the Osmo Action and Osmo Pocket

It would be amazing to be able to mount either device on a remote control ground vehicle that also allows you to control the camera functions of whatever device is mounted to it.

No clear specs yet on the DJI Unmanned Ground Vehicle, but we should have those in a few hours when the new product drops.  Bookmark the link to the product launch here, and you can also register to win an Osmo Pocket just for registering for future updates.
