RUMOR: Mavic 2 Is Closer Than You Think–First Specs

One of our most reliable sources of DJI rumors on soon to be released DJI products is an anonymous Chinese blogger.  His concept sketches of new DJI products almost always end up as a real thing in very short order.

And he’s at it again.  This time he’s suggesting a Mavic 2 is already in the works and will be released in 2018.

And he’s been right before.  On October 6th his sketches of a new camera gimbal (that was the Zenmuse X7) appeared just one week before the X7 was released by DJI.  While we do NOT expect a Mavic 2 before Christmas, the fact that this source has been right before lends a lot of credibility to the rumor.

New Sensor

The Mavic 2 camera will have a 1″ camera sensor with four times the area of the 1st generation Mavic Pro.  The camera will also be equipped with a 28mm lens with adjustable aperture and mirror shutter, enhanced dynamic range, color sensitivity, signal to noise ratio and improved night/low-light performance.  The new specs also mention D-Log and D-Gamut.

Heated Battery

The Mavic 2 Intelligent Flight Battery, with 4820 mAh of 15.2V power will provide up to 35 minutes of flight time, and with a 70w built in battery heater will mean significantly improved cold weather performance.

This new Mavic 2 battery will not be compatible with the original Mavic Pro.

Flight autonomy systems are further upgraded as well, with the addition of rear binocular sensors that can detect obstacles in real-time for greater flight safety.

Larger Size

What is most interesting in the Mavic 2 leak is the potential for an increase in the size of the Mavic 2 compared to the Mavic Pro.  While we have no specific measurements, it sounds as though the new aircraft could be slightly larger to accomodate the technological enhancements.

Our man in Shenzhen says the Mavic 2 will be released in 2018, our guess would place it in March or April, based on the successful timing of the DJI Spark drone release.
