What You Need To Know About Drone Insurance 2: The Sequel

[spacer height=”20px”]

Last week we wrote a fairly in-depth article about State Farm ‘drone insurance’.  While it’s really just a Personal Articles Policy, there is a lot of information for drone owners to take advantage of.

Since we wrote the story, some readers have reached out to us with more information on the subject.

First off, State Farm’s Personal Articles Policy (PAP) is not available in California.  So if you live in the Golden State, check around with other insurance carriers to see if they have a Personal Articles Policy that will cover your drone.

If you live in another state and travel to California, then you can be covered while there, but you cannot get a policy written in California.

Bryson also recommends that you list each accessory individually on the policy so you have documentation of what is covered.

Per internal documents guiding agents, State Farm’s “intent is to insure the drone and its related accessories or add-ons.  These may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Cameras
  • Controller
  • Drone Batteries
  • Drone Propellers

State Farm’s has Underwriting Considerations that must be met before a policy is issued:

  • The insured drone must be used for hobby or recreational purposes
  • the unit must weigh less than 55 pound to be eligible for coverage and to be considered for recreational/hobby use
  • A copy of the actual purchase documents must be submitted with the PAP application
  • Information on the brand and model of the drone an related components is required.

We really appreciate Bryson sharing this info on the State Farm drone insurance with us…it’s a big help.

And he actually put together a Google sheet to keep a list of SF agents across America who offer, and are familiar, with Personal Articles Policies for drones.

You can access the Google document here.  You can even add to the list here.

Just remember that a Personal Articles Policy that covers your drone (or other stuff) isn’t the same as DJI Care Refresh when you buy your drone.

Unlike DJI Care Refresh, a PAP will

  • Cover both lost & stolen drones as well as accidental damage
  • Does not require you to have the drone to make a claim
  • Can be renewed each year
  • Has no 48 hour activation limit
  • You get a cheque to buy a new drone.  Not a repair or a refurbisment.

We love it when our readers share great stuff like this with.
