Earlier this month, GoPro held it’s most recent earnings conference call and shared an interesting fact: GoPro has finally worked through the pain that was the Karma drone, and the failure of invading DJI’s space.
So there’s more than a little irony that, today, DJI is now coming for GoPro with it’s newest gadget the DJI Osmo Action.
Modeled after the ubiquitous GoPro style of action cameras, the DJI Osmo Action is about to move the needle on action cameras with features that surpass even GoPro.
RockSteady Electronic Image Stabilization
No challenge to the GoPro HERO7 can be taken seriously without electronic image stabilization that equals GoPro’s HyperSmooth. In fact, we expect just about every review to focus on this feature alone. DJI calls their image stabilization Rock Steady, and for good reason. Just like HyperSmooth, Rock Steady gives a gimbal like quality to your videos. Rock Steady is epic, and every bit as good as GoPro’s HyperSmooth.
After years of providing advanced, reliable stabilization technology to filmmakers around the globe, DJI has gone one step further. RockSteady combines EIS with complex algorithms, delivering stable, shake-free footage no matter how heavy the action gets.
Dual Displays
Creators and selfie-junkies are going to love the front facing LCD display on the Osmo Action. Long a feature that GoPro users have been begging for, DJI figured out a way to move beyond the 1980’s style LDC info display that has plagued GoPro’s forever.
Users can now perfectly compose a shot while they’re in it for better results on the fly.
Voice Control
DJI Osmo Action is always ready, waiting to hear one of 5 voice commands to start capturing the action immediately.
Mimo App
No action camera is complete in 2019 if it doesn’t have wireless connectivity and control. DJI Osmo Action connects seamlessly to yoru iOS or Android device, giving you control over a full suite of features just like the Osmo Pocket.
Thank You GoPro
One of the biggest advantages that Osmo Action has going for it is all of the GoPro infrastructure that users have already. Just about everyone I know has a drawer full of GoPro mounts, handles, accessories, etc. And the DJI Osmo Action is now laying claim to them.
Of course DJI and it’s 3rd party partners like FREEWELL, PolarPro and others are simulataneously releasing all of the accessories you could ever need like mounts, ND filters and more. Watch for a future article showcasing the best.
Price
At $349, the DJI Osmo Action comes in below the price of the GoPro HERO7. Not only is the Osmo Action a better action camera than the HERO7, it’s also a better value.
DJI Care for the Osmo Action is only $29 and covers you against a variety of accidents for one year.
