BREAKING! DJI Releasing Action Camera on May 15th!

It comes as no surprise that DJI will be releasing a waterproof action camera to compete head-to-head with GoPro.

With mastery over the skies, courtesy of it’s growing fleet of professional and recreational drones, DJI has set it’s sights on the hand-held action camera market. In a big way.

Late last year DJI released the Osmo Pocket, the world’s smallest 3-axis 4K handheld gimbal camera. It’s been well received by creators, and DJI continues to push out accessories to enhance the experience.

Many of us have been wondering for years when DJI would pull the trigger and finally produce an Action Cam. Thankfully that wait is over on May 15th. On that day DJI will hold a special launch event and show the world how it will dominate GoPro in a space that GoPro invented.

DJI has been super busy on social media today sending out links and hashtags relating to the event. The comic strip right offers some clues about what you can use the new, as yet unnamed, action camera for.

As you can see from the strip(r), DJI says you’re going to use their new action camera everywhere…rock climbing, amusement park, diving, surfing….you name it.

We don’t have any firm specs yet, so there’s not much we can tell you other than the fact that DJI will likely use it’s family of DJI GO software apps to make sure the action camera shots integrate seamlessly with media you capture using other DJI products.

Possible names that have been bounced around include DJI Osmo Action and DJI Osmo Go. Hopefully we’ll firm that info up shortly with our sources.

Could it be a 360 camera like the GoPro Fusion, or should we expect it to be DJI’s answer to the new GoPro HERO7?

We wouldn’t be surprised to see yet another story creation app come out at the same time, further enhancing DJI’s dominance with creators.
