BREAKING: DJI Makes FCC Application For Phantom 4 V2.0
The last few months have been full of DJI rumors. First there was the Mavic Pro II. Then we saw credible reports (and photos) of a Phantom 5 quadcopter with interchangeable lenses.
Even a Spark 2 rumor made the rounds, briefly.
Today our FCC sniffer caught wind that DJI has officially applied to the FCC for wireless frequency testing for a new Phantom 4 V2.0 drone.
While we’ve heard many possible details about the both the Phantom 5 and the Mavic Pro II, as usual the Phantom 4 V2.0 comes out of the blue as a complete surprise. This is typical of how well DJI is able to keep new products under wraps.
Our friend OsitaLV very recently shared that “the P4P v2.0 has new sine wave ESC (Electric Speed Controller) with FOC (Field Oriented Control) for propulsion, and new SDR for radio transmission. Emm, a small upgrade just like Mavic Pro Platinum. The old P4P uses square wave ESC instead.”
If this is correct the new P4P2 is basically a Phantom 4 Pro Platinum….and it may actually adopt that name. Quieter operation and extended battery life due to improved electronics and software.
OsitaLV has been so accurate in the renderings he creates based on both first and second hand descriptions, as well as his own intel, but we do differ with him on one feature of the rumored Phantom 5: OsitaLV suggests the body is aluminum, we think it will interfere with signal transmission, and the shell is actually a metallic looking plastic.
If the name of the game for DJI is to make incremental improvements in ESC and FOC for enhanced flight times and to improve transmission dynamics to satisfy those potential buyers who are on the cusp of purchasing a new DJI drone then they can declare “mission accomplished”.
Based on the timeline of the application, it would not surprise us to see the new Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, or P4P2, launched at NAB2018 this Spring.
